Lizzo was among several high profile figures who publicly backed Democratic United States presidential nominee Kamala Harris last year. Because of that, her clear dislike for Harris’ eventual opponent, U.S. president Donald Trump, is hardly unexpected. Still, when it comes to other celebrities, such as Nicki Minaj, showing support for the current administration, the singer has offered a more layered perspective.
As reported by Pop Base on Twitter, Lizzo replied to a TikTok comment asking how she felt about Nicki Minaj’s backing of Donald Trump and her shift toward conservative politics. Rather than treating it as a simple issue, the Detroit native framed the conversation around nuance and focused on the financial realities that can come with political alignment at that level of fame.
“I’m getting texts about Nicki, and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I didn’t even know,” she said. “Then I researched and saw what was going on. I’ma say it like this. Celebrities’ opinions of other celebrities [do] not matter. I’m telling you, it doesn’t matter. So my opinion of her does not matter. But what I will tell you is you’re about to see an influx of people who see that it is more profitable and more beneficial to join that side. You’re going to see it, it already started, and it’s going to continue. This is Trump’s first year as president [in his second term]. We got three more years of people who are going to surprise you. It’s going to hurt your feelings and it’s going to disappoint you. You have to know that there’s money behind everything. There are privileges behind every move people in these positions make, and I’m not surprised.”
Given Lizzo’s outspoken political stance, some listeners took her comments as something that could also apply back to her. Others felt she may have been pointing more directly at celebrities who stayed quiet before the election or those whose views appeared to shift afterward.
For many observers, this conversation echoes long running debates around Nicki Minaj, including references to her past anti Trump remarks or the way some of the people she now aligns with previously criticized her. Either way, the overlap between politics and celebrity remains a risky space, where perception, power, and profit are always closely tied.
