Artist Spotlight: CR Srikanth
The VS PopTM Brand is how CR Srikanth releases all his music. He prides his music on being genreless but in technical terms it blends “orchestral and electronic elements with emotionally driven melodic structures.” His background also includes Indian classical traditions (Carnatic and Hindustani) which showcase the importance of culture within his music. These Indian classical motifs are combined with western harmonic structures. He has trademarked his unique fusion style as the VS PopTM Sound.
We sat down with CR Srikanth to talk about their creative journey, inspirations, and what’s next.
Eye On Pop: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?
CR Srikanth: Inspiration usually begins with emotion, but I translate it through structure. I might experience a feeling or an idea first, but instead of immediately improvising, I sit down with sheet music and begin shaping it intentionally. I’m inspired by the contrast between Western harmonic architecture and Indian melodic evolution. That dual perspective influences how I think about melody — not just as a tune, but as emotional motion over time. For me, inspiration becomes real when it takes form on paper. Once it’s written, it becomes something I can develop, refine, and expand.
Eye On Pop: Can you walk us through your typical songwriting process?
CR Srikanth: My process usually begins with sheet music. I start by sketching melodic phrases, harmonic progressions, or rhythmic structures directly on paper. I focus first on architecture — where tension builds, where release occurs, and how themes evolve. Once the structure feels strong, I refine the emotional dimension. If lyrics are involved, I ensure they follow the musical phrasing naturally. I never want the words to feel forced; they must sit organically within the structure. Even though I start analytically, I leave space for intuition. It’s a balance between compositional discipline and emotional spontaneity.
Eye On Pop: What’s your approach to creating a unique sound?
CR Srikanth: My approach to uniqueness begins with clarity of identity. I don’t chase novelty — I focus on depth. By combining Western structural thinking with Indian melodic expression, I create a sound that reflects both precision and emotional nuance. I pay close attention to phrasing, space, and tonal color. A unique sound isn’t just about instrumentation; it’s about how ideas are developed and expressed consistently. For me, uniqueness comes from authenticity and structural integrity.
Eye On Pop: How do you stay motivated to keep creating music?
CR Srikanth: Motivation comes from curiosity and discipline. I treat music as both an art and a practice. Even when inspiration isn’t immediate, I show up and write. Often, creativity emerges through the act of working rather than waiting. I also stay motivated by constantly learning — exploring new compositional techniques, cross-cultural ideas, and production approaches. Growth itself keeps me engaged.
Eye On Pop: How do you stay connected with the messages and themes in your music?
CR Srikanth: I stay connected by ensuring that every piece reflects something I genuinely believe or feel.
Before finishing a composition, I ask myself whether the emotional message aligns with the structure. If a piece is about tension or transformation, the music must reflect that through its design. When emotion and structure align, the message feels authentic.
Eye On Pop: What message or themes do you hope to convey through your music?
CR Srikanth: I hope to convey that structure and emotion are not opposites — they strengthen each other.
Many of my themes revolve around identity, transformation, cultural dialogue, and resilience. I want listeners to feel depth without confusion — complexity without chaos. Ultimately, I hope my music reminds people that discipline and feeling can coexist beautifully.
Eye On Pop: Do you have a dream director or visual artist you’d love to work with?
CR Srikanth: I’m drawn to directors who treat music as part of the storytelling architecture. Someone like Christopher Nolan, who understands structural intensity, or Denis Villeneuve, who creates emotional atmosphere through pacing and silence. I admire filmmakers who respect music as a narrative structure rather than background decoration.
Eye On Pop: Are there any upcoming projects or releases you’re excited about?
CR Srikanth: Yes, I’m currently working on projects that further explore cross-cultural orchestration and modern compositional frameworks. I’m especially excited about pieces that integrate classical structure with contemporary production aesthetics. My focus is on creating work that has longevity — music that remains relevant beyond trends.
Eye On Pop: How do you handle criticism and feedback on your music?
CR Srikanth: I see criticism as part of refinement. I evaluate feedback by asking whether it improves clarity and strengthens structure without compromising authenticity. Constructive feedback helps sharpen craft. But I also understand that not all opinions align with my artistic direction. Confidence and openness must coexist.
Eye On Pop: What personal qualities do you think are most important for a musician to have?
CR Srikanth: Discipline, emotional awareness, and resilience. Discipline builds technical skill. Emotional awareness deepens expression. Resilience sustains longevity. Talent may create opportunity, but consistency and integrity build a lasting career.
