The soundtrack for fantasy adventure game Crimson Moon is now streaming, with music from HEALTH alongside members of Ice Nine Kills and Periphery.
Developer ProbablyMonsters released Crimson Moon last week, pairing its launch with the arrival of a heavy metal soundtrack. The action RPG combines a gothic setting with High Renaissance influences.
Christopher Wilson composed the score, described as “brutal, symphonic fury”. Music accompanying the game’s four boss battles includes work by HEALTH, Ricky Armellino of Ice Nine Kills, Misha Mansoor of Periphery and metal YouTuber Jared Dines.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Armellino said: “When I got invited to collaborate with the incredible team at ProbablyMonsters to help bring Crimson Moon to life, I was so honoured.” He added: “The game is an epic action RPG that brings gothic and classical elements together with heavy metal, and making these tracks was a blast.”
The album contains 34 tracks and is available to purchase through Steam. Fans can also listen on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.
Discussing the soundtrack with NME, Wilson said: “Crimson Moon is heavily inspired by metal music of all kinds; you can see it in the art style, the narrative, and of course the score. Much of the project is an homage to classic heavy metal themes and iconography, and we thought it was only proper to bring in some heavy-hitter musicians to round out the score. Not only did they bring additional authenticity and considerable technical talent, but they also added a greater breadth of metal styles.”
Wilson also highlighted the value of working with artists who enjoy gaming: “Bringing on musicians who are also gamers was also hugely important to the process,” he said. “It gave us a common understanding of game genres, titles we could reference, and most importantly a real excitement for what we’re building with Crimson Moon because they understand and love the art form.”
Player feedback has given Crimson Moon a “mixed” rating on Steam so far. The developers have said an update is being prepared.
Elsewhere, anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly making the search increasingly difficult for anyone trying to buy a PlayStation 5 Pro.
