Chappell Roan has one simple request for photographers on the red carpet: please, no yelling. Before she made her entrance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony last weekend, photographers were asked to lower their voices as she prepared for her photo session.
On Saturday, Roan appeared at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to induct Cyndi Lauper, wearing an intricate outfit inspired by several of Lauper’s iconic looks. While her heartfelt speech has also been widely shared, it’s a behind-the-scenes video that has gone viral—showing a red carpet staff member giving instructions to the crowd of media before Roan’s arrival.
“OK, Chappell’s coming. No one will yell at her or she will leave,” the staffer announced. “Everyone, be quiet, be nice, be smiling.” Although there were a few chuckles, the photographers complied and captured their shots respectfully. Roan even gave a playful spin for one photographer who politely asked. (When she later shared the photos on Instagram, she didn’t tag the photographers.)
Roan has been open about her discomfort with aggressive photographers at public events. During the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, one photographer crudely shouted “shut the fuck up,” prompting Roan to clap back by repeating the words and pointing a finger, saying, “No. Not me, bitch.”
Shortly after, Roan explained the moment in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “This is quite overwhelming and quite scary. For someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying, and I yelled back,” she said. “I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that.”
