The 1975’s Matty Healy teamed up with Tiny Habits to release a new cover of James Taylor. You can check it out below.
The unexpected cover appeared on Healy’s TikTok page earlier this week on Monday November 24. He shared a gentle acoustic version of Taylor’s 1968 classic “Carolina In My Mind”.
For the clip, The 1975 frontman plays an acoustic guitar and shows off a new mohawk. He performs the song with the Boston folk trio Tiny Habits.
The pairing also feels like a full circle moment. Tiny Habits first went viral a couple of years ago by reworking The 1975’s “Somebody Else”, and later joined James Taylor as openers on his most recent tour.
As Stereogum pointed out, this new cover arrives only two months after Healy attended a James Taylor concert and was caught on camera visibly moved by the performance.
His fiancée Gabbriette shared footage from the night on TikTok, revealing that Taylor is Healy’s favourite artist of all time and showing him completely thrilled throughout the show.
Fans immediately took the new post from the “Robbers” singer as a hopeful sign that more music might be coming, possibly a follow-up to 2022’s “Being Funny In A Foreign Language”.
“this has to mean an album is coming soon, right?????????????? or am i just delusional,” someone commented, while another added: “Im calling it, folky album early spring”.
Others began wondering if the collaboration with Tiny Habits could spark a return to touring, with the Boston trio potentially opening for The 1975.
‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ earned a four star review from NME. El Hunt praised the record for mixing “huge, immediately memorable pop bangers with the more complex, neurotic lyrical voice of The 1975’s more recent releases”.
The review also said the album “feels like the right next step after pushing experimental excess to its logical conclusion, and is comparatively lean with just eleven tracks to its name”.
The band’s last world tour wrapped in March 2024, followed by an “indefinite hiatus” soon after. They still headlined Glastonbury as their lone 2025 performance. Their manager and Dirty Hit label boss Jamie Oborne later mentioned they were finishing their “pretty extraordinary” new album, and the group appeared to hint at the project during the final seconds of their set.
Speculation about a new era has continued to grow as the band updated their logo and refreshed all of their social media pages. On top of that, manager and Dirty Hit label boss Jamie Oborne said in May that they were putting the final touches on their “pretty extraordinary” new album.
Earlier this month, the band stirred conversation once again by removing a track from their most recent album on streaming services after Healy decided he no longer liked it.
As highlighted by Stereogum, the new cover comes just two months after Healy went to see James Taylor perform live, and was filmed watching the gig in awe.
