Yungblud has admitted he “can’t remember” singing Changes during Ozzy Osbourne’s Back to the Beginning concert.
The 28 year old artist received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance thanks to his emotional take on the Black Sabbath classic at Ozzy’s farewell show at Villa Park in Birmingham in July, but says the intensity of the moment has left him with little recollection of actually being on stage.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Yungblud said: “It was the first time I’ve ever sung a song directly to one person. I went into this strange, almost transformative place. I honestly don’t remember it.”
Even without a clear memory of the performance, Yungblud believes it marked a turning point in how he is viewed as an artist.
The musician, whose real name is Dominic Harrison, explained: “That felt like the moment. It had been building, but I think that’s when people really started to pay attention.
“I watched it back afterwards and I still don’t know what the f*** took over me in that moment.”
Yungblud’s rendition was the only live performance nominated in the category this year, and he feels it is especially meaningful given his deep admiration for Ozzy, who died just weeks after the show.
The Zombie singer said: “It’s incredible that it was recognised for rock performance and that it’s the only live moment in that category.
“I love that something so personal was celebrated, just me telling the person who introduced me to music and changed my life how much I love him.”
Still, Yungblud had no idea at the time that the moment would resonate so strongly with people.
He said: “Honestly, when I walked off stage, I didn’t expect it to spark anything like that. I knew it was special. It felt cinematic.
“I think it was the first time people really related to me, like, ‘Oh s***, he just loves Sabbath. He just loves Ozzy, the same way I do.’”
Yungblud also feels that his performance of Changes stands as something that can never truly be recreated.
He said: “That wasn’t something you can repeat in a studio with multiple takes, drop ins or overdubs. It happened once, in that exact moment, and it could never exist in the same way again. That’s what makes it special. It was there, and it will never be again, and I think that’s beautiful.”
