Artist Spotlight: Princess Anne
Princess Anne is a singer-songwriter and keyboardist who collaborates with guitarist Steve Shredder to create dynamic, immersive music. Her song “Eternity,” from her album Amphitrite Rising, explores different women’s perspectives on the ideal man and the feeling of being with him forever. The track highlights her trained vocals and Shredder’s expressive guitar work. This year, the duo released two albums, Phoenix Crest and Amphitrite Rising. Inspired by Greek myths and legends while writing much of Phoenix Crest in Greece, Princess Anne aims to preserve these stories through music. She says the decision to release both albums came naturally, driven by the songs themselves and the inspiration behind them.
In this exclusive Q&A, Princess Anne opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
Eye On Pop: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Princess Anne: I have been influenced by David Coverdale from Whitesnake. The passion that he brings to his music is undeniable. Particularly in his song “In the Still of the Night”, just before the cello interlude kicks in. It’s almost entirely him singing, and he is just screaming his heart out. It touches me every time I hear it.
Eye On Pop: Have your influences changed over the years?
Princess Anne: Yes, I feel I’m always evolving as a music artist. I appreciate all genres of music, and I love experimenting with different instruments.
Eye On Pop: How do your personal experiences shape your music?
Princess Anne: I love people, so my music is mostly based on their experiences. But sometimes, I will add snippets about my life in my songs.
Eye On Pop: When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
Princess Anne: A numerologist told me that I am a singer-songwriter, and that I had been this in my past life as well. So this intrigued me, and I decided to study opera at a conservatory. It was there that I found out that writing music, singing, and playing instruments came naturally to me.
Eye On Pop: Who was your first major musical mentor, and what did you learn from them?
Princess Anne: Kathleen Matts, the amazing opera voice instructor. She pushed my voice to the limit. Showing me what I was capable of.
Eye On Pop: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Princess Anne: I travel the world to see all my friends and family. I love to hear about their lives and enjoy the time that I have with them.
Eye On Pop: How do you stay true to yourself while evolving as an artist?
Princess Anne: I write music based on what I see and what people tell me. I will always create songs using their words and feelings. Their perspective on how they lived it matters to me.
Eye On Pop: What drives you to keep creating music even during challenging times?
Princess Anne: Sometimes the best music is written out of a challenging situation. I like it when people sing about it and create art using that hard time as the baseline. It can be turned into a thing of beauty.
Eye On Pop: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?
Princess Anne: I explore folklore and legends. I also love romance novels and old poetry. But the best inspiration is the true stories that people tell me of the great loves of their lives.
Eye On Pop: What message or themes do you hope to convey through your music?
Princess Anne: I want to convey the different events of all of our lives. Happy and sad. I am passionate about everything I do. This is the only way I can truly live.
