Adele once recorded an unexpected rap for an unreleased version of Tinie Tempah's hit ‘Earthquake’, which featured Labrinth.
The rapper behind ‘Pass Out’, who has just released his first album in nine years, The Night’s Not Dead, revealed that the ‘Hello’ singer recorded a verse inspired by Nicki Minaj for the 2011 track, although it never made the final version.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column, Tinie recalled: “She [Adele] was actually in the studio when I made Earthquake with Labrinth. We were having a little muck around on the mic.
“At the time, she really liked Nicki Minaj and had Nicki Minaj-type raps and stuff like that.”
With ‘Earthquake’ approaching its 15th anniversary next week, Tinie was asked whether fans might finally hear Adele's contribution. However, he was unsure whether it would ever be released, responding: “Oh my goodness, let’s see if she clears it. Let’s see.”
Instead of releasing the album as one complete project, Tinie divided The Night’s Not Dead into three parts, titled 9PM, 12AM and 3AM, with each section reflecting a different emotional stage of a night out.
The album also addresses the growing challenges facing the nightlife industry. According to the NTIA, 14 businesses within Britain's night time economy are disappearing from the country's operating stock every week.
Explaining the thinking behind the record, Tinie said: “With times being as they are and division at an all-time high, I became more interested in creating an inclusive world that people can relate to and feel part of. The Night’s Not Dead is my way of telling the story… the power and fun of a night out.”
He also highlighted the importance of genuine human connection, explaining: “The venues that gave so many artists, including me, a place to grow are disappearing and this project is a celebration of those spaces and the people who keep them alive.”
That idea has also become central to the album's wider campaign. Tinie has partnered with Music Venue Trust and Save Our Scene to raise awareness of the difficulties facing independent music venues across the UK. As part of the initiative, he has taken the project to smaller shows and intimate underplay performances, bringing audiences back to the grassroots venues that helped shape British music.
Tinie will continue the campaign on the road later this year, launching a UK and European tour in Stockholm on November 16 before performing at London's Roundhouse on December 3.
The Night's Not Dead is available to stream now on all major streaming platforms.
