Artist Spotlight: SAMM!
From childhood performances of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion ballads to discovering hip-hop through her brother's collection, music became her language for understanding love, loss, and heartbreak before she experienced them firsthand.
In this exclusive Q&A, SAMM! opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
Eye On Pop: Can you tell us about your journey into music and what inspired you to pursue this career?
SAMM!: Music has always been apart of my life. I started singing around 6yrs old at the age of 7, in competitions and at events. I did broadway also at 7. My mother was the one who saw my potential and always believed in me. I was such a shy, introverted girl. She made me believe in myself, loved me and never give up.
Eye On Pop: How would you describe your unique sound or style to someone who’s never heard your music before?
SAMM!: Voice, ‘Buttery’ - smooth and warm. Style, ‘Alternative blend’, blends of Pop, RNB, Soul.
Eye On Pop: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your work?
SAMM!: Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce & Celine Dion. These women taught me strength, love, power, honesty through their music and emotion in their voices
Eye On Pop: Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and producing new songs?
SAMM!: I write on paper or in my phone, ideas, quotes, lines. I will then come up with a concept, usually with what I’m going through or feeling. I’ll then start constructing the song in a poetry like form, then it will usually start with an acoustic version of the song, then I like to work with the producer/s to start forming the sound and emotion through the production and what I want to portray as a whole to make the track.
Eye On Pop: What has been your most memorable performance or milestone so far in your career?
SAMM!: Releasing my Debut single, ‘In My feelings’ and releasing my debut music video to the song. Introducing myself to the world, SAMM!.
Eye On Pop: How do you handle creative challenges or writer’s block when working on new material?
SAMM!: I find not forcing it, I have so many notes, parts of songs I’ve wrote, I basically just go in my vault get inspiration from there. But being in a good space, never with frustration or angry because then nothing will feel right or good enough. Being by myself helps, no distractions.
Eye On Pop: What themes or messages do you aim to convey through your music?
SAMM!: Truth.. Love, loss, self reflection, strength, honesty. All emotions we feel or may go through, if one person can relate then I’m grateful.
Eye On Pop: How has your personal life or experiences influenced your songwriting and artistic expression?
SAMM!: Coming from very little, I didn’t have the luxuries of having options or having much at all. I worked towards who I’ve always known who I would be, I believe that each one of us being are able to grow, to succeed in anything we put our minds to, if you work towards it and willing to try. Work smarter not harder. Don’t give up on yourself..
Eye On Pop: What are your goals for the future, upcoming projects, collaborations, or aspirations?
SAMM!: To be signed to a label. To have a team to support me and I would be proud to be with, who believes in my vision and we can work together in creating music for the world that brings people together.
Eye On Pop: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians trying to break into the industry today?
SAMM!: Put your music out, it’s normal not to feel the most confident or ‘good enough’ when putting yourself out or your work that you may compare to others. Don’t put yourself up against anyone else, we all have a story, don’t be afraid to share yours.
