Justin Hawkins has shared his blunt thoughts on the music of Harry Styles and Coldplay, describing it as largely unmemorable and uninspiring.
The I Believe In A Thing Called Love singer has never shied away from giving candid opinions about other artists, regularly breaking down songs and trends on his well followed YouTube series Justin Hawkins Rides Again.
While talking about the former One Direction member’s 2022 solo hit As It Was, Hawkins suggested the track feels like a formulaic reworking of the Eighties classic Take On Me by A-ha.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, he said: “In pure statistical terms, most music by definition is average and it doesn’t really move me.
“So there’s a load of stuff that you can just neglect.
“There are things that are so derivative of existing and very specific songs from the Eighties, that in 40 years time, you’ll still be singing the ones from the Eighties.
“That Harry Styles song, that’s Take On Me by A-ha but they started the chord sequence in a different place. It goes around the same four chords and it has a similar sort of motif on the synthesizer.
“But that song in 40 years will be completely forgotten and everyone will still be singing the A-ha one. And I think that’s fair.”
He then turned his attention to Chris Martin’s band, adding: “Nobody’s going to be singing Coldplay.
“I don’t care.”
Hawkins’ comments arrive shortly after he and his brother and bandmate Dan Hawkins caused a stir among fans of Yungblud.
The pair drew backlash after criticising the I Think I’m Okay artist’s MTV VMAs tribute performance for the late Ozzy Osbourne.
Yungblud had previously hit back at what he called “bitter and jealous” critics following his appearance alongside Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry in a tribute to the Black Sabbath legend, who passed away aged 76 in July.
