Chappell Roan has spoken out after accusations that a member of her security team upset Brazilian footballer Jorginho’s young daughter during a hotel encounter in São Paulo.
The 28 year old singer, who took the stage at Lollapalooza Brazil on Saturday March 21, shared her response through Instagram Stories on Sunday morning. Her statement came after Jorginho claimed online that his daughter was left “extremely shaken” when a security guard reportedly approached her and her mother during breakfast and accused the child of “harassment” after she simply recognised Roan and smiled.
“I’m just going to tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard who is not my personal security,” Roan said, lying in bed at the beginning of the video.
“I didn’t even see,” she continued. “I didn’t even see a woman and a child. Like, I did not. No one came up to me. No one bothered me. Like, I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well.”
Roan also explained, “I did not ask the security guard to go up to talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions. When they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken.”
The artist ended her statement by reassuring fans and addressing the situation directly. “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. That is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”
In his Instagram statement, Jorginho explained that his partner Catherine Harding and his 11 year old daughter were staying at a São Paulo hotel before Roan’s headline performance at Lollapalooza Brazil when they noticed the singer having breakfast in the restaurant.
“My daughter, like any child, recognised her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her,” the midfielder shared, noting she didn’t approach Roan or ask for anything.
He said the situation then became uncomfortable when a security guard allegedly approached his family and spoke “in an extremely aggressive manner,” accusing his daughter of being disrespectful and harassing the singer. He also claimed the guard threatened to report them to hotel staff, which left his daughter “extremely shaken” and crying.
The situation comes after Roan has recently dealt with several uncomfortable interactions involving fans and photographers. Earlier this month she filmed herself during a tense moment involving autograph seekers and photographers while she was in Paris.
“I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me,” she said to her phone in the video, uploaded by an onlooker. “These are all the people that are completely disregarding my boundaries,” she added later in the clip.
While some people praised Roan for speaking up about paparazzi behavior, Boy George posted on X earlier in March suggesting she should “own your fame” and telling her to “cheer up girl. The world is at your feet stop kicking it!” He also wrote that “boundaries are boring” and said she should “break them with the magic of kindness.”
Others have publicly supported Roan. Folk rock artist Noah Kahan recently shared messages on Instagram Stories backing the “Pink Pony Club” singer.
“Maybe they should just idk leave her alone?” Kahan wrote in his first post. In another video he expanded on his criticism of paparazzi culture and spoke about his own experiences. “These people literally find out where you’re staying, where you’re flying in to, where your team, family, whoever is staying. They are clearly not your fans, they just sit outside places so they can try to guilt you into signing s t so they can sell it,” he said.
