Australian indie pop group The Tullamarines have delivered one of the most talked about Like A Version performances of the year, putting their own spin on Fleetwood Mac’s classic track “The Chain” during their first appearance in the triple j studio.
The quartet, made up of Angus Purvis, Lucinda Machin, Josh and Benny, embraced the song’s shifting moods throughout the performance. The band shared vocal duties during the softer sections before diving into the famous bass led sequence and gradually building toward an energetic finale. While the cover remained true to the essence of the original recording, it also showcased the group's distinctive four part harmonies. Alongside the cover, they also performed their original song “Running On Empty.”

The band admitted the selection was an intimidating one. “We had a lot of songs that we were thinking about. The Chain came up as an option, and we were very, very scared,” Purvis revealed during an interview with triple j. “And they were thinking we couldn’t do that justice.” Machin, who shares vocal and instrumental duties, explained that the group eventually decided to “give it a go, see what happens,” describing the song’s lyrics and arrangement as “very angsty.” Purvis added that “The Chain” feels like a song that has existed “forever.”
There is plenty of history behind that sentiment. “The Chain” appears on Fleetwood Mac’s landmark 1977 album Rumours, which spent 31 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and remains one of the chart’s longest running No. 1 albums. The record has sold over 40 million copies globally and continues to rank among the biggest selling albums of all time. Although “The Chain” was not released as an official single, it has grown into one of the band's most beloved and recognizable songs, finding a lasting place in movies, television, sporting broadcasts and countless cover versions over the years.
The Tullamarines continue to gain momentum within Australia's independent music landscape. Their second EP, Safety Blanket, released in 2025, has earned a nomination for Best Independent Pop Album or EP at this year's AIR Awards. The winners will be announced during an invite only event at Adelaide Town Hall on July 30. Over the past year, the band has expanded its audience through sold out headline performances, festival appearances and regular support from triple j, while also opening for international acts including The Vaccines and Everything Everything.
