Olivia Rodrigo has admitted that she and her friend Conan Gray often end up giving each other “notoriously bad advice.”
The Vampire singer and her 26-year-old close friend regularly share their new music, but because of how close they are, their feedback is not always accurate and sometimes completely off the mark.
During their conversation for Interview magazine, Olivia, 22, reminded Conan, “We notoriously give each other bad advice sometimes about samples.
On Superache, you played me Memories, which ended up being the biggest song on the album.
"Everyone adored it, and I remember telling you, ‘I just think you have better songs.’
"Then, when I played you Guts, I showed you Vampire and asked, ‘Isn’t this good?’ And you said, ‘Not for a first single.’
"We’re always so wrong about each other’s songs. We’re just too close to it and can’t see the forest through the trees.”
Olivia also recalled worrying about Conan while he was working on his most recent album, Wishbone, admitting that she thought he had become a little too “obsessed.” But once she heard the final work, she was thrilled.
“To be honest, I remember being a little concerned,” she said. “You seemed so consumed by this record and weren’t doing anything else.
"You were eating, breathing, and sleeping this album. And I thought, ‘I don’t know if that’s healthy.’
"Sometimes when I do that, the songs don’t turn out great. But when you played me the demos, I was blown away. They were incredible. I realized then just how special the album was, and I remember feeling so proud of you. I even told you, ‘You better promote this album. Every breakfast should be on a morning show. Every chat you have should be on a podcast, because this album needs to be heard.’”
