Jack Harlow ended up drawing a lot of attention to himself during the rollout for Monica after saying he felt he “got Blacker” while making it. Once that remark made its way online, it quickly took off across social media. People started coming up with jokes and nicknames like “D’Anglo,” “Stevie Wonderbread,” “Vanilla Rice,” and more.
At the same time, the Louisville, Kentucky rapper and singer faced criticism. TDE CEO Punch was one of the people who questioned the statement. “Got Blacker is wild. How exactly does one get ‘Blacker?’” he wrote on Twitter.
In general, this probably was not the kind of reaction Harlow was hoping for, especially considering his last project, Jackman., arrived three years earlier.
Still, it is the situation he found himself in. It looks like the 28 year old has either taken it in stride or chosen to tune out the jokes and criticism altogether.
But now it has become even harder to avoid, as Saturday Night Live joined in over the weekend. During the well known “Weekend Update” segment hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, a version of “Jack Harlow” appeared to talk about Monica and the reactions surrounding it.
The person playing him is actually SNL cast member Ben Marshall. Even so, for anyone who has watched Harlow in recent interviews, the impression is surprisingly accurate in a funny way. It is convincing enough to make you look twice.
